It Didn't Go Swimmingly
Exercise: 40 mins elliptical, 15 mins strength, 1 mile run, got in my bathing suit but pool was closed. Wah Wah.
I swam again yesterday for the first time since joining the Y. I really enjoy swimming but I need to figure out how I can get in my swim with the pool schedule. The times are a little inconvenient but I'm trying to figure it out. Today was my fault because I misread the calendar, total bummer.
Yesterday I ran 2 1/2 miles on the tm pretty slowly. I've had some nagging hamstring soreness for the past few months. It's nothing terrible but it could be if I don't watch it. I did an 11 mile trail run Saturday on the 1/2 marathon course I'll be running in 10 days. I pushed pretty hard and that may have led to the extra soreness in the hamstring. Anyways, that's why I decided to start swimming again. I plan to keep running a few miles on my run days but hope to get in some swimming to get off my legs a little.
I need to learn more about swimming etiquette as well. Yesterday when I got to the pool only one lane was open due to a class. An older gentleman was already in the lane so I asked if he minded if we split the lane and he kinda ignored me. So I figured it was ok and I jumped in and started to swim. He was kind of all over the place but it was just the two of us so I just steered around him when needed. Then another person came and she asked if we could circle swim. I agreed but I'm not sure if the old man heard or understood because he continued to swim erratically down the middle. I was also the faster of the swimmers, not that I'm speedy or anything, but put me up against some 80 year olds and I look like I'm racing. So I was having to constantly weave in and out. Then another dude wants to come in and I don't think he understood the circle swimming either because he just stayed to one side. I think it took me twice as long as it normally would but I eventually got my 1/2 mile swim in.
What do you do in that situation? I guess just put up or get out, right? Now I know to avoid that time, or any time when only 1 lane is open. Music Man is working at home for the next few weeks so I'm thinking while he's doing some work at night, after Little Man is in bed, I can run to the pool for 45 minutes. The only other time is early in the morning which means we don't eat breakfast together, which is the main meal we get to enjoy as a family. I guess I'll just do that when I have to. I can probably still swim 2-3 times a week. I love it so!
Hope you had a great weekend and a great short week! How is it already Wednesday??

Five for Friday and Zen in 10
Exercise: 1 hr elliptical, 20 mins strength
1. Confession- I feel like I have no time to blog anymore and I blame it on my toddler's shortened naps and erratic sleep schedule. Truth- I am spending all my free time reading 50 Shades of Grey. It is both appalling and compelling. I find it entertaining but am totally freaked out by the fact that it's considered "Mom Porn" because I would never want my (hypothetical) daughter to be treated that way. Maybe I'm a prude, and although I am entertained, I find it about as erotic as a horror film. Wait, that makes me sound like the creepy one ;)
2. We cancelled our cable service today. I am not one of those people that never watches TV, btw. We just don't need it because we have our media center computer which gets HGTV and PBS and there's always Netflix. But coincidentally, our cable provider also provides internet and it mysteriously slowed down when our cable subscription was closed. Hmmmm...Fishy.
3. I was never one to make my bed daily; I'm just going to mess it up at the end of the day anyway. Monday I changed the sheets and have been making it ever since. I really enjoy getting in to the made bed at night and our bedroom seems so much more serene now. Then I read this: Zen in 10
4. I have been making a conscious effort not to snack mindlessly in the evening. It's my favorite time to snack but it is not doing good things for my clothes, which are too snug. Instead of snacking while reading or watching tv, I'm jumping on the elliptical. I'm going at a very easy pace but I'm not really trying to burn calories, just not consume them. Works well so far!
5. Trail run set for tomorrow, my last long one before my half in a few weeks. I'm going to try to do most of the course, about 10 or 11 miles. Hoping to avg below an 11:30 pace but the course is fairly technical in spots so I'm not counting my chickens.
happy Friday! Have a great Weekend!

The C Word
Oh dear, a challenge has presented itself once again. I love the idea of a running streak, surely I can run 1 mile a day. What do you think? Are you in?
Lentil Tostada
Exercise: 30 mins elliptical, 20 mins strength
The 5 am wake ups are becoming the norm so I guess I don't need to blog about it all the time, but I'm impressed with myself that I've been able to consistently get my ass out of bed that early :) Also, I've started incorporating a smoothie into my daily meal plan. I was going to make it a challenge, but as soon as I write that word I fail. So, I've just been doing it and it's going great. I didn't put any time constraints on it so if I don't choose to do it tomorrow it's not a failure.
Smoothies are a great breakfast option for me. I've been making huge ones, with tons of fruit, veggies, protein powder, and yogurt or cottage cheese. And there's enough left over to make a perfect mid morning snack. Green smoothies are pretty darn tasty. You know who else thinks so?
The pre-cooked lentils at Trader Joe's have been a favorite around here for awhile. They are a perfect topping for salads or warmed up for a grain bowl. The last few days I've been putting them on everything from salads, to tostadas, to sandwiches.

A perfect way to get in extra fresh fruits and veggies

Lentils mixed with avocado, grated carrots and salsa for an awesome tostada. Topped with spinach and TJ's creamy feta dressing
Lentil salad sandwich on sprouted rye. Inside I mixed lentils, avocado, tomato, grated carrot, veganaisse, dijon, and topped with shredded cheddar and the crushed up ends of a bag of potato chips. Amazing! Served with sliced cucs.
I'm hosting a play date and potluck later so I need to tidy up a bit and hopefully read a little more 50 Shades ;) (blushes) It's so ridiculous so far, but ridiculously entertaining. I do have to say I'm getting a bit annoyed with how many "quirking up" and "magic"ing of facial features there are. Almost every other page this Christian dude is quirking an eyebrow or lip. It's becoming a little redundant. Oh well, I obviously keep going back...
Hope you have a great day!

All The Rowboats
Here's little Man's biggest fan ;) Besides me...well, and Grandmas and Natalie and random dudes ;)
But Music Man worked on this song of Regina's and I just love it! Every time I hear it I enjoy it more and more. Her album comes out at the end of the month and you should buy it!!!

Black Hole of Technology
Exercise: 5.25 miles tm run. 3 miles tempo, 2 miles hills
The air conditioning was broken at the Y today. We've had nearly hundred degree temps the past few days so needles to say, it was hot. And I normally look like a beast while running so the lack of air totally amplified my beastliness. I was all red faced, with sweat flying; not pretty.
The motoactiv failed me this weekend so I may have to rescind my glowing reviews. I'm going to give it another chance because I think I was the black hole of technology on Sunday, but I was still a little annoyed. The outing was fun but a mess.
My trail runs are quickly becoming my favorite weekly run. I'm doing long trail runs since I'm training for a trail half marathon coming up in a few weeks so these are also my most relaxing runs. Because the in-laws were here visiting, Music Man and I were able to spend a few hours together up in the hills. Well, more near each other than together; he mountain biked while I ran.
We started out a bit later than I normally would so it was warmer than I prefer, but still decent weather. I started my motoactiv as soon as I started running but later started my sportstracker phone ap just in case. Glad I did because the motoactiv stopped working after the first mile. Unfortunately I didn't realize right away and wondered how I could possible be running a 14 minute mile down hill. But then my phone wasn't working correctly (sportstracker did though), I got hot, ran out of water and couldn't get in touch with Music Man. Oh, and I got stung by a bee! Poor me!!! ;)
When Music Man finally found me I was in a crap mood until I reminded myself that at least I got to get out for a long, guilt free run. Little Man and the grandparents got to enjoy some time together as did Music Man and I. And my long run days= yummy food days so I also reminded myself that I would soon have cake in my future ;)
Later that day we took a quick trip to the zoo (mistake due to the crowds and high temps.) And later had some people over for Mexican food (margaritas!!!) and to watch the eclipse. I made the pinhole projector and was so excited it actually worked! It was pretty cool to see the phases of the eclipse.
We had a pretty fantastic weekend but the in-laws had to leave on Monday (not before I got my mother in-law to cut my bangs.) Thanks Cathy!!! ;)
Also, on Friday we went to the Skirball Cultural Center to see their interactive children's Noah's Ark exhibit. The whole family was able to attend and every one of us from 2 to 70 enjoyed it. If you are in the LA area or ever visit, I totally recommend it. So much so that we became members and I can't wait to go back!
Hope you had a great weekend and a great rest of your week!

Dorky trail gear. How sweet is that headband?
